Save the date: Wednesday, Aug. 4, at 7 p.m. for our next Zoom event featuring “Sidelined: Sports, Culture and Being a Woman in America” by Julie DiCaro, an award-winning sports journalist and editor at Deadspin and a rare female voice on sports radio. A former attorney who has reported on professional sports for more than a decade, DiCaro has written a provocative and powerful book in which she fearlessly tackles head-on some of the most pressing issues facing women in sports today, both participants and the women who cover them: Sexism, misogyny, online harassment, sexual harassment, marginalization. At a time when so many women have found their voices in the #MeToo movement, DiCaro challenges her readers to demand a higher standard for a sports world that too often has looked the other way on gender issues that affect us all, including domestic abuse, equal pay and equal treatment.
DiCaro, a lively and evocative writer as well as polished speaker, brings passion and an insider’s knowledge to this timely and important discussion. We urge you to join us for what promises to be a thought-provoking evening for all of us.

Julie DiCaro is a sports journalist and editor at Deadspin, and a former attorney. Her writing has appeared in outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Vice Sports, The Establishment, and HuffPost. An outspoken critic of sexism in the media and online harassment, DiCaro joined with ESPN’s Sarah Spain in 2016 to create the viral video #MoreThanMean, for which she won a Peabody Award, a 2017 Gracie Award for Women in Media, a Clio Sports Grand, and many other awards. She also received a 2019 Gracie Award for her work in Chicago sports talk radio. She lives in the Chicago suburbs.
